Decide on the color of the cabinets. This is best if it is in rhyme with the color scheme of your kitchen. Sometimes, a color of the cabinet that is contrasting with the surrounding color can give a unique and elegant look.

Collect the necessary materials and tools. If you are building kitchen cabinets from scratch for the first time, it would be better to try the framed as opposed to the frameless cabinets. So you will need to have the frame wood and stiffened plywood for the carcass, the sides and the back. Keep close the paint and finish. A hammer, nails and wood glue are some of the necessary things you should be having. Do not forget a table saw and a router for correct cutting of the material.

Start by joining frames before nailing the side boards and the back support. If you will be having lockable doors and drawers, mark the position of those locks on the frames before installing them on the doors and the drawers. Use screws to fix the doors if they have a glass part. Note that it would be easier to apply the finish on the doors and the drawers before fixing them on the cabinetry frames.
